Jan Rolandelli was awarded the Saint Augustine High School Volunteer of the Year award. Through her Teaching Academy practicum, internships, and other volunteer work, she has accumulated 636 volunteer hours! Students in St. Augustine High School’s Academy of Future Teachers are learning what it takes to care for a developing infant child. Using RealityWorks High Tech Infants, students take on the responsibly of parenting over an extended period of time. Using advance sensors, infants are programmed to cry when needing attention, and respond to parental care such as feeding, burping, rocking, and changing diapers. Teachers can print a report and the end of the assignment to see how well the students complete their parental assignments!

On September 10th, Teacher Assisting I students made their first trip to Crookshank Elementary where they will complete roughly 10 hours of field experience over the course of the year. Working with 1st grade classrooms, the future teachers will use literacy-based lessons to drive this service-learning initiative.

On October 27th, Teaching Academy students visited Flagler College here in St. Augustine to assist them with their post-secondary planning. Every year, students are invited to tour Flagler’s beautiful campus, meet directly with the Department of Education, eat lunch in their pristine dining hall, and even sit in on upper level education courses.
