The Academy of Culinary Arts enjoyed preparing two hearty meals for Home Again St. Johns and their Dining with Dignity program this year. Students planned, prepped, cooked and served a full hot meal and dessert to homeless community members in November and again in March this school year. In November, students prepared an Italian pasta dish, with a side salad, homemade yeast roll and dessert. Our second meal, students prepared grilled chicken, yellow rice, green beans, garlic toast, and upside-down pineapple cake.
This is an excellent project for our young culinarians as they are able to apply practical kitchen skills and well as service skills when we travel downtown and set-up a serving line to serve our guests. Students always finish out the evening sharing their sense of joy and satisfaction of serving a hot meal that they have prepared with a group of people who may not have had one without their assistance.
We look forward to partnering with Home Again St. Johns next school year to serve again. In addition, we plan to partner with Epic-Cure to cook, serve, and distribute 30 meals a week to families in need. More information will be shared as we develop this new partnership!
