The Academy of Coastal and Water Resources students at St. Johns Technical High School learned there is a lot more to our beaches than shells and sand. The students saw first-hand the amounts and the effects of plastic debris that is washed up on shore every day. The Academy participated in a micro plastics study at the beach which was designed by Dr. Maia McGuire from the University of Florida Sea Grant who is researching micro plastics.
The students spent time on the beach collecting the plastic and recording their findings. They gained a solid understanding for the need to dispose of trash properly and to cut down on one-time use items.
After the beach survey, the students were treated to a behind the scenes tour of Marineland, complete with dolphin, sea turtle and shark presentations. The fun and educational day was made possible by the Academy’s partners, On Site Environmental Consulting and Marineland.
